One Hundred Push-ups

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I began the One Hundred Pushups a Day program today.  I found in on a blog a while back that I read occasionally, but today it was featured on LifeHacker, where it recaptured my attention.  It’s just the latest addition to my frugal fitness program. I completed 46 push-ups in five sets.  I’m not trying to “get back into shape” as most people are.  I’m trying to “get into shape”.  Honestly, I have never been “in shape” or anywhere close for that matter.

My first and foremost priority remains distance running.  I have less than 180 days until I run the Walt Disney World Marathon.  I am estatic about it.  I ran six 5Ks this past spring, with my best time being 28:24.  This fall, I plan to run a few more 5Ks, a couple of 10Ks, and hopefully at least one half-marathon.  I’m averaging around an 11 minute per mile pace on my walk/runs right now.

Other than doing the push-ups, today was a complete failure when it comes to fitness.  I probably had 5000 calories.  I had a Rice Krispy treat for breakfast and all was well until the boss brought me two Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  I followed it up with the lunch I brought from home and added several (actual number withheld) slices of Papa John’s pizza.  Dinner was normal but since then I have scarfed down a half-pint of Ben & Jerry’s among other snacks.  On a brighter note, I am sticking to my two-cokes-a-day plan.

I think I’ll knock out another set of push-ups before hitting the sack.

Back to Blogging

I’ve decided that it’s about time that I revisit blogging.

I’ve maintained a web presence consistently since April 1998.  First it was a static webpage (followed by a website) on AOL which documented my biography up to that point as well as concerts that I had attended.  The site was called “glossophobia”, which means fear of public speaking.  At the time that was the closest thing I could come up with that meant “shy”.  I included links to the site in every concert review I wrote, every chain letter I forwarded (remember, it was the late 90s), and every guestbook I signed.  It was a successful site.

After securing employment as a full-time webmaster in 2001, I used a college-owned server to continue my site and later transitioned into blogging with livejournal.  Updates came less frequently.  It seemed that after web developing for 40 hours a week, there just wasn’t much interest in doing it as a hobby anymore.  After getting married and having my first child, I found that the majority of my contributions to the internet consisted of photos and my photography passion was ignited.  My photo gallery website – www.bistan.net – popped up in 2004.

I read blogs daily on all sorts of topics: fitness, photography, finance, productivity and everything in between.  I envy some of the authors.  I’ve tried multiple times to create a blog focusing on just one topic, but I always fail.  I just have too many interests to narrowly focus that much attention on just one of them.

So here we are.  I’m working towards a blog which has as many interests as the author.  Will it be as successful as others?  Maybe not.  But I will have fun along the way.
