Christmas Creep and Holiday Break

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Doesn’t it seem like everyone is trying to rush Christmas this year?  I’m not talking about the retailers who put the chocolate covered cherries out before the Halloween candy.  I’m not even referring to the malls and other stores that had Christmas decorations up before Labor Day.  I’m talking about my friends and family and other people that I associate with.

Pretty much every Christmas event that I will be a part of this holiday season has happened (or is happening) this week.  This afternoon, I will attend the third Christmas party of the week.  Tomorrow, we are exchanging gifts with some distant (as is location) relatives.  These are all things that usually happen the week or so BEFORE Christmas, not the week after Thanksgiving!

People are usually participating in tree-lighting ceremonies during the first week of December, but I haven’t been to any of those — because apparently I socialize with people who lit their trees when it was still toastly outside.  Maybe its just a coincidence or maybe its just the people I know.  I’ve even heard more than a few people talk about how they are already done shopping.

My upcoming Christmas break is looking very nice at work.  Here is the deal:

  • Sat/Sun Dec. 20 – 21: Weekend
  • Mon/Tue Dec. 22 – 23: Law School Closed for Asbestos Removal
  • Wed Dec. 24 – Wed Dec. 31: Mercer Christmas Holidays
  • Thu Jan 1: Mercer New Year’s Holiday
  • Fri Jan 2: President says “Why start back on Friday? Take that day off too.”
  • Sat/Sun Jan. 3 – 4: Weekend

For the non-mathmaticians that peruse this blog, that makes 2 straight weeks (and 16 straight days including weekends) off.  Let me clarify that: PAID TIME OFF . . . without using vacation pay.  I feel like I’m actually a teacher or something to get that much time off.  The only downside is that I still have to pay for day care, even though I don’t need it.
